Exhaust & Intake Systems - Backwards mufflers? - my buddy had a shop install an exhaust system on his truck a few months ago. Well we hadn't been. Quality mufflers with a universal fit that provide greater installation. A heavy gauge shell and expandable bushings are featured on Walker Glass Pack.

Glasspacks arent the answer - you need a flowmaster or magnaflow. Magnaflows sound like glasspacks but flow better.

I dont know that a glasspack, especially one that long, really flows are that well. Magnaflows are probably the best flowing mufflers and most likely to get you mpg or power gains, even better than flowmasters because the magnaflows dont have baffles or chambers.

They use a mesh tube going straight through the muffler with some kind of filler material in the muffler (but outside the tube) to absorb some of the sound. Still yet i wouldnt expect any spectacular gains in mpg or power, especially with JUST a muffler change.

Perhaps with a whole new exhaust, headers, pipes, high flow converters, etc. But that will probably cost more than you'll ever save in gas.

There in lays the big (yet rarely thought about) picture of alterations. Very rarely can you buy an item that will pay for itself, within a reasonable time frame, in fuel mileage gains. Even with gas prices what they are today, few things will actually pay for themselves very quickly. I look at it this way, I had some extra dough to blow and dumped a couple hundred in my truck that gained me 5mpg on average, that's about 75 extra miles a week for me in my travels.

That's the difference in making it to the next payday before filling up. It might or might not pay for itself, but I've reduced my weekly bills, even if only by a few bucks, it will add up.

And i just want some better sound, personally I like the way a glasspack sounds over straight pipes. I've switched from regular to mid grade gas, and have already seen drastic improvement in mpgs. I know that winter blend gas also doesn't help for mpgs. I'm gonna put new plugs and wires in sometime in spring. Thank you for the help on which way to install it.

That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to make sure and couldn't find it anywhere else. The reason I got one so long is that's how long the existing muffler is, so less hassle with adding pipe sections, and it will still be loud. Another question tho. My brother, as crazy as he is, said something about soaking a glasspack in oil right before you install it to break it in faster? Sounds kinda weird to me. Never heard of the oil thing. Not sure how much you paid for your glass-pack, but my most recent magnaflow was about $60.

Straight through, sounds amazing. Tried flowmaster --that ain't me. Adding additional pipe isn't horrible, as you can just cut out the old mufler and slide the new parts on so they overlap, eyebal it, cut it, tack it, remove it, then weld it. If you can weld that is. Unit505's got the right idea as far as mileage modifications go I paid $25 for it, plus I had to get some adapter sleeves so all in all it was $40. I don't have a welder, but my buddy has one, so were gonna wait till it warms up and put it on. Gotta fix another clamp along with that.
